The name St. Catharines carries the history of the people who first settled this area. Like many place names in Canada, it reflects the language, culture and geography of the region at the time of its founding.
Place names are living documents — they preserve the voices of those who came before, whether indigenous peoples, colonial settlers, religious missionaries or civic planners. The study of place name origins is called toponymy, and NameTrace is building the world's most comprehensive free reference for this field.
